Opera has announced support for Google Gears in the newest version of its mobile Web browser, Opera Mobile 9.5. Google Gears will allow developers to create faster Web applications for mobile browsers. Opera is being careful to note that the mobile version of Gears included in its Opera Mobile 9.5 technology preview follows a different philosophy than a desktop browser. In both models, Gears allows for offline functionality and data synchronization, but this is important to the mobile version of Gears as it allows developers to cache data more efficiently and process data discreetly in the background. By downloading application code that allows for most of the work to be done offline, mobile Gears eases the strain on the mobile processor and can make applications more responsive. Applications like Zoho and Buxfer currently utilize mobile Gears, but Opera didn't offer any other available applications for its tech preview.
