Google has announced Google Voice, an online voice communication manager based on technology acquired when the company bought GrandCentral in July 2007. Google Voice allows users to make and receive calls, read automatically transcribed voicemail, and enjoy phone communication in convenient, innovative ways.
Voice provides users with a new phone number that can be setup to route calls to multiple lines such as an office, cell, or home phone. Voice can even direct calls from particular callers to the phone of a user's specification. Users have the ability to block, announce, or screen callers, and they can even listen in to the call before connecting. Google Voice will also send, receive, and archive SMS messages sent to or from any device to the service.
Google Voice has many features to strengthen voicemail communication. The service transcribes all voicemail messages and the messages can be viewed online or on a phone, or sent by e-mail or SMS. Voicemail messages can also be shared with other users.
The new service from Google will also allow conference calling and call recording. Users can switch between phones, jumping from a cellular line to a home line to save cellular minutes. Google Voice allows users to make calls to phones in the U.S. for free, and international calls are priced cheaply, according to the company.
Google Voice will be available to users who have a GrandCentral account over the next few days, and Google says that Google Voice will be available to all users within weeks.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 30,000 LG Spyder 830 slider phones because the phones have difficulty sustaining a connection and have poor voice quality on calls with emergency 911 services.
According to a report issued by the Commission, one motorist in a disabled car was able to dial 911, but lost connection with emergency services. No injuries were reported. The recall includes several models of the phone sold by various dealers in Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Washington State and Wisconsin from September 2008 through November 2008.
Consumers are being contacted by their carrier or LG Electronics to schedule a free software upgrade.

According to a story published by Mobile-Review, Nokia's PR Director for Europe & Asia Viktoria Eremina confirmed that before January 27, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphones were being manufactured with a faulty earpiece. A statement made by Eremina in an email to the publication said that as of late January, problematic 5800 smartphones being sent to service centers are being fixed by replacing faulty earpieces with units produced by a different manufacturer. Eremina confirmed that prior to January, replacement ear pieces were faulty, although the company was not aware of the issue with the original hardware at that time. Eremina assured customers that the phone is now safe to buy.
Mobile-Review published a lengthy study of Nokia 5800 defects involving hardware and software problem patterns that its users were experiencing. According to the site, the most reoccurring problem for users is that the top right corner of the 5800's casing loosens with time because of a slightly displaced screw, and that over time, the ear piece suffered creaking noises and spontaneous volume changing. The site took apart more than ten retail units and put them through tests to determine that common humidity was the cause of the flaws.
The information comes at the same time as reports concerning the North American release of the 5800 XpressMusic at flagship Nokia stores, indicating that the phone has been taken off the shelf. There are rumors that customers are unable to use the phone's 3G data connection. |

At Mobile World Congress in February, Nokia announced Ovi Store, the company's "content marketplace," which would allow users to download applications, games, videos, podcasts, and more. The service promised to also utilize location-based features and social media connections to tailor content specifically to users.
As developers begin uploading content for the platform, mocoNews asked an important question to Vice President of Product Development for Media George Linardos: Will developers who release free applications and supplement them with advertising be required to use Nokia's ad network?
Linardos recently got back the news site, stating that Nokia is still reviewing the policy and will have more information closer to launch. Though this does little to further the conversation, MocoNews noted that it seems strange for the company to have an open-modelled store but a closed advertising revenue model. It also said that a recent cut of 30 Nokia advertising employees in the UK also doesn't lend itself to closed model.
When MobileBurn met with Nokia at Mobile World Congress last month, Nokia told us that of 15 different price plans for content, one would be a free option for apps. The company was planning to have options for showing Nokia Interactive ads within the free apps that would give the authors a 70 percent cut of revenue. With these statements, its important to note that Nokia did not confirm or deny the notion that developers may or may not be able to implement their own advertising in their free apps. Nokia is planning to open the Ovi Store in early May. |
