The 2009 edition of the Google Summer of Code projects has been announced. We appreciate Google's continued support of free software and for funding numerous open source projects, and will apply certainly for this years edition. It will be the fifth edition of this open source event, and when accepted we will have been part equal times...we are really looking forward to welcome another group of contributors with fresh ideas.

Uh oh, Meebo - it looks like you might finally have some decent competition in the Android IM client space. Palringo, makers of the iPhone IM client of the same name, has released the first beta of their Android port.
Like the iPhone application, Palringo for Android supports MSN, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo!, Jabber, Gtalk, Gadu-Gadu and Facebook chat. It’ll also allow you to send picture messages to any contact, or share your location - a feature which seems a bit extraneous, considering that countless other services with the same purpose (including one built into the Android platform out of the box) are putting a ton of effort into coaxing people into sharing their location without any significant success.

Let us all for a moment believe that last week’s rumor of new iPhone hardware is true. With that in mind, let’s all settle in for the latest batch of rumors regarding the new hotness from Apple according to the Boy Genius. BGR’s sources within AT&T have revealed a slew of tasty morsels about the upcoming handset announcement. First and foremost is the announcement date, which shouldn’t come as a surprise anymore – mid-June. AT&T and Apple have been working on a U-Verse app that will allow you to control your home DVR. The new iPhone will be much faster than previous generations with talk of wicked fast HSDPA. This next bit is a bit out there, but we’ll let you decide.

There’s a rather sad story out of Cincinnati where a high school girl hanged herself because a nude photo she sent to her boyfriend via cellphone ended up spreading around the school, if not the town itself. It’s called “sexting,” and it’s apparently a big deal on high school campuses. And because of this legitimate tragedy—why on Earth would kids tease this girl to the point where she decided to hang herself?—people are now wondering what, if anything, should be done to stop the phenomenon.
There’s a few approaches here. One is the hands-off approach: let kids run around and do whatever they want, and let them learn from their mistakes. That hardly seems effective, and could well be dangerous, as it was in Cincinnati.

Immediately after the Motorola Alexander took its first steps into the internet’s oh-so-harsh light, things looked bleak.
Purported to be Moto’s “last stand” in the mobile hardware biz, folks were expecting it to be some valiant effort to change the world (or at least the world’s opinion of Motorola’s post-RAZR handset lineup); instead, it ended up being a crappy Windows Mobile 6.1 phone with a cramped looking keyboard.
When the QWERTY-less version of the Alexander, the A3100 (otherwise known as “Atila”), debuted at CES, things looked no better. This was essentially half of the Alexander, and it sucked something fierce - so at its best, ol’ Alex would be 50% suck.
